Joint International Master’s Programme in Sustainable Development
Course outline, qualifications and competences
The Master’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Development is offered as part of a Joint Degree Programme in cooperation with the following international universities: Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy), University of Leipzig (Germany) and Utrecht University (Netherlands). The range of courses is broad, interdisciplinary, interacademic and international. This programme provides knowledge and skills that enable students to contribute to the development of a responsible environmental attitude (sustainable development). Students learn how to assess the important impact of national and international economic and social developments against the backdrop of environmental pressures. Contributions to more sustainable development include measures such as recycling materials, a responsible handling of natural resources, and raising awareness for social responsibility in companies. In a basic module, students acquire basic knowledge and skills regarding essential working methods used to support sustainable development, which are strongly interdisciplinary. This enables them to understand the dynamics, complexity and interactions among natural, social and economic processes and systems. Students may specialize in environmentally oriented elective subject areas ranging from sustainable urban and regional development, global processes, and technologies relating to sustainable development and administration and on to the responsible management of natural resources and social and political dimensions of sustainability. Students are required to complete a semester abroad, choosing a partner university that suits their area of specialisation.
Expected results
Graduates of the Master’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Development will be able to answer questions related to sustainable development, including interdisciplinary aspects. This enables them to contribute to encouraging society to practice sustainability. They will have acquired social competences (teamwork, conflict management, project management) in addition to their specialist qualifications.
