In the beginning there was an idea...
In order to understand the effects of human actions on the environment, the communicative integration of one's own field into others is increasingly required in every profession. Only in this way can access to environmental systems be broadened in such a way that cause-related problem-solving strategies can be developed. Since the problem area of man and the environment is inextricably linked to the actions of man individually as well as in a social and economic context, a comprehensive scientific and/or technical analysis alone is not sufficient. Rather, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary, which also takes into account economic, social, juridical and philosophical aspects and corresponds to the systemic character of the environment.
The basic idea of the Environmental Systems Science program is to provide, in addition to a sound subject-specific education, the fundamentals and thinking of several other disciplines, thereby establishing relationships between them. This involves not only the analysis of individual system elements, but also the study of system dynamics and the interconnectedness of these elements. Therefore, systems analytical and mathematical methods are also an essential part of the course.
